Heart of the Village Campaign Launched

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Village Halls are the heart of a vibrant community, but increasingly, more effort is required to preserve these buildings, else a breakdown of community spirit is inevitable. To help remedy such a problem, Action in Rural Sussex is pleased to announce the launch of The Heart of The Village Campaign. A campaign lobbying government to secure easier access to funding and encourage Parish Councils to include community building and Village Hall costs in their action plans. Development and support acquired from public bodies will also provide income for the Village Halls which would go towards new activities, maintenance and other future developments.

The Heart Of The Village Campaign aims to increase awareness and use of  services available to local people at their Rural Community Buildings. In most cases Rural Community Buildings are simply Village Halls but they could also be community owned pubs, converted offices or classrooms. Whatever form a community building takes, it significantly supports voluntary and community organisations within a Village and is essential if activities and services are to continue.
Through providing workshops and support for all those running community buildings, AirS will help local people to appreciate the importance of their Community Buildings. Community owned Village Halls are an asset to any rural area, providing a volunteer run platform for social networking and community bonding, elements that may be lost in a community with no central hub.

For  details of how to get involved with the campaign please see our Heart of The Village page, where you can sign up to find out more, share your stories, donate to the campaign and more.

The website possesses many new features, including an interactive map of Sussex which allows users to view the services that Action in rural Sussex delivered in their parish during the last calendar year. We would greatly appreciate any comments which you may have regarding both the content, structure or usability of the website. Please click here to provide us with your views.

Village of the Year 2009 Competition Launch

Friday, January 30th, 2009

AirS is pleased to announce the opening of the Village of the Year 2009 competition. The competition is open to all communities of less than 5000 population within West and East Sussex. An Entry Form is available from here.

The annual Village of the Year competition is a way of celebrating the many achievements of active rural communities, that strive to improve and enhance village life for all their residents. The competition celebrates community activity and cohesion. Each year AirS holds its Village of the Year Awards Evening that celebrates the entries and provides a focus for our active communities† with the Lord Lieutenants of each County making the individual presentations.

Many villages say that they gain as much from entering as they would from winning any of the prizes. The process brings the community together and also helps to highlight strengths and weaknesses. For the winners and runners-up there are prizes that can be invested in the community. The overall winners have the opportunity of further accolades in the regional and national competitions. Sussex has a good track record at these levels. For example last yearís winner,† Fernhurst has recently won the best communications category within the South East.
